The Glebe Island Bridge was decommissioned in 1995 following the opening of the adjacent Anzac Bridge and was added to the NSW State Heritage Register in 2013.

Dolphins protect passing vessels and the heritage-listed Glebe Island Bridge, which is one of the last remaining swing bridges of its type in Australia. The northern and southern dolphins were in a state of disrepair and presented a risk of collapse as Sydney entered its NYE celebration period and relied on safe passage for fireworks and other large vessels.
